What is the 1HD-T engine?

The 1HD-T is a 4.2 litre (4,164 cc) six-cylinder diesel with a factory turbo. Unlike the 1HZ, it is direct injected.

Which vehicles use the 1HD-T?

Our listing names the Toyota LandCruiser 80 Series and the Coaster (HDB30 and HDB50). Independent references list the 1HD-T in the turbo-diesel 80 Series (HDJ80) from its launch in 1990, and in Coaster buses. Engine swaps are common in 80 Series, so check the code on the block rather than relying on the badge.

What problems are reported with the 1HD-T?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

• Big-end bearings. Early 1HD-T engines had big-end bearing problems. Some failed when driven flat out up long hills while towing caravans. Ask for any paperwork showing the bearings were checked or replaced.
• Cooling and past work. On older 80 Series diesels, the condition of the cooling system, any overheating history and any tuning or engine work are common sources of trouble.

What are the signs a 1HD-T may need replacing?

The sources we found do not list symptoms specific to the 1HD-T. A knock that gets louder under load, low oil pressure, overheating and heavy smoke are all reasons to stop and get it checked before more damage is done.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a 1HD-T?

A spun or knocking bearing usually means the crankshaft and bearings need work at the least, so it is rebuild or replace. If the engine is a 1HD-FT 24-valve rather than a 1HD-T, tell us: they are not the same engine.

• Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
• Rebuild your own 1HD-T, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.

1. Is it an 80 Series or a Coaster, and what year? Is the code 1HD-T or 1HD-FT?
2. Does it tow heavy loads? Plan the running in before the first big trip.
3. Is the turbo healthy? It comes across to the new engine.
