Engine reconditioning
Engine reconditioning in Auburn starts with your own engine. We take it apart, find out what is worn, and quote what it needs. The machining happens at our Auburn machine shop, so the work stays in one place.

From teardown to a tested engine
- Teardown. We strip your engine, clean it and inspect it.
- Quote. If it is serviceable, you get a fixed quote for the rebuild. If it is not, you pay a teardown fee for the labour.

What is engine reconditioning?
Reconditioning is a full rebuild of a used engine. The engine is stripped down and every part is cleaned. Each part is then measured against the maker's specifications. The block, crankshaft, rods and camshaft are crack tested. The cylinders and crankshaft journals are checked for taper, ovality and wear.
Worn parts are then machined back into shape or replaced. The common jobs are:
- Reboring and honing the cylinders
- Grinding the crankshaft
- Reconditioning the cylinder head
- Crack testing of the main parts
Last, the engine is put back together with the right clearances.
In Australia, this trade is taught as the Certificate III in Automotive Engine Reconditioning.
When do you need it?
You may need a recondition when:
- The engine uses more oil than it should, or has blow-by. Worn bores and rings can cause both.
- A bearing has failed. Dirt in the oil and a lack of oil are common causes.
- The engine has failed, but the block and crankshaft may still be saved.
- We do not have a new crate engine for your vehicle. A rebuild of your own engine can still be an option.

Questions
Can every engine be reconditioned?
No, not every engine can be saved. We only know after the teardown. If yours is not serviceable, you pay the teardown fee. Then you can look at a new crate engine instead.
Is a reconditioned engine the same as a new crate engine?
No. A reconditioned engine is your own engine, rebuilt. A crate engine is a brand new long motor, ready to fit. Our guide to new, reconditioned and used engines compares them.
