Guide

Signs your 2GR-FE needs replacing

Oil at the back of the engine, an unusual engine noise or the oil pressure light coming on can point to the VVT-i oil hose. A fuel smell on an affected Kluger needs a dealer check straight away. Low oil pressure or a new knock means stop driving.

Toyota 2GR-FE engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The 2GR-FE engine is Toyota's 3.5 litre V6 petrol from the Aurion, Kluger, Tarago and RAV4 V6. Reported issues include a VVT-i oil hose that can leak on earlier engines and oil problems when services are stretched. We list a remanufactured 2GR-FE long motor at $5,850.

Prices as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.

What is the 2GR-FE engine?

The 2GR-FE is a 3.5 litre (3,456 cc) 60-degree V6 petrol engine with an aluminium block. It has double overhead camshafts on each bank, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing on both camshafts (Dual VVT-i) and port fuel injection. Timing chains drive the camshafts.

Which vehicles use the 2GR-FE?

Our listing names the Toyota Aurion (GSV40 and GSV50, 2006 to 2017), Kluger (GSU40/45 and GSU50/55, 2007 to 2017) and Tarago (GSR50/55, 2006 to 2019). Independent references also list the RAV4 V6 (GSA33, about 2007 to 2012) and the Lexus RX 350 and ES 350.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the 2GR-FE?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • VVT-i oil hose. On earlier engines a rubber section of the oil feed hose to the variable valve timing can perish and leak oil. Toyota in the US replaced it under a service campaign; an Australian reference says Aurions built before about mid-2009 used the same hose.
  • Oil sludge from stretched services. Oil can thicken if services are stretched, which can starve the engine. On-time oil changes matter on this engine.
  • Kluger fuel pipe recall. About 650 XU50 Klugers built in May and June 2014 were recalled for a fuel delivery pipe that could leak. That was a recall on the fuel pipe, not the engine itself.

What are the signs a 2GR-FE may need replacing?

Oil at the back of the engine, an unusual engine noise or the oil pressure light coming on can point to the VVT-i oil hose. A fuel smell on an affected Kluger needs a dealer check straight away. Low oil pressure or a new knock means stop driving.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a 2GR-FE?

A leaking oil hose caught early is a cheap repair. An engine that ran low on oil pressure because of a burst hose or sludge may have bearing damage, which is when a rebuild or replacement comes in.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own 2GR-FE, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $5,850.

What should you ask before ordering a 2GR-FE?

  1. Aurion, Kluger or Tarago, which series and year?
  2. Has the VVT-i oil hose been replaced? Check any recall on the vehicle with a Toyota dealer.
  3. Was the engine run low on oil? What does the oil look like?
  4. Do I want it fitted at your workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

2GR-FE FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my 2GR-FE?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a 2GR-FE for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
