Guide

Signs your 1HZ needs replacing

The sources we found do not list symptoms specific to the 1HZ. The general signs of an engine in trouble apply: overheating, coolant loss, knocking, heavy smoke, low oil pressure, and loss of power on hills. If it has an aftermarket turbo, find out who fitted it and how it was set up.

Toyota 1HZ engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The 1HZ engine is Toyota's 4.2 litre six-cylinder diesel from the LandCruiser 70, 80 and 105 Series. It is known as tough but slow; problems usually come from overheating, missed belt changes or a badly set-up aftermarket turbo. We list a new timed 1HZ long motor at $7,950.

What is the 1HZ engine?

The 1HZ is a 4.2 litre (4,164 cc) six-cylinder diesel. The block is cast iron, with seven main bearings. It has no turbo from the factory: Toyota never sold one. It has one camshaft and two valves per cylinder. Fuel goes into a small pre-chamber from a mechanical pump. A rubber belt drives the timing.

Which vehicles use the 1HZ?

Our listing names the Toyota LandCruiser 75, 78, 79, 80 and 100 Series.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the 1HZ?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Cracked heads, rarely. A small number of heads crack around the pre-combustion chambers.
  • Head gaskets after overheating. Head gaskets are generally reliable unless the engine has been overheated.
  • Timing belt and injection pump. The belt is reliable if it is changed about every 100,000 km, and the injection pump may need an overhaul at high kilometres.
  • Aftermarket turbos. Many owners add a turbo for towing. A poorly set-up turbo can overheat the engine and damage pistons.
  • Big-end bearings. Big-end bearings are noted as a weak point on the older LandCruiser diesels, often made worse by poor maintenance.

What are the signs a 1HZ may need replacing?

The sources we found do not list symptoms specific to the 1HZ. The general signs of an engine in trouble apply: overheating, coolant loss, knocking, heavy smoke, low oil pressure, and loss of power on hills. If it has an aftermarket turbo, find out who fitted it and how it was set up.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a 1HZ?

A tired injection pump, injectors or a missed belt change are often repairs. Bearing failure, a cracked head after overheating or piston damage from a badly tuned turbo usually point to a rebuild or a replacement.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own 1HZ, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $7,950.

Freight is quoted per job. We fit engines at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. Fitting jobs need a 50% deposit. Engine-only orders are paid in full before dispatch.

What should you ask before ordering a 1HZ?

  1. Which LandCruiser is it: 70 Series body, 80 Series or 105 Series, and what year?
  2. Does it have an aftermarket turbo, and will it go back on?
  3. Is the injection pump in good order? It comes across to the new engine.
  4. Has the cooling system been checked?

1HZ FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my 1HZ?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a 1HZ for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
