Engine returns and refunds

In short: If you change your mind, we accept an unopened engine back, less a restocking fee. Freight and logistics charges are not refunded, and you pay the return freight. Once fitting has started, even partly, there is no refund for change of mind. A faulty engine is different: your consumer law rights apply, with no restocking fee.

This page explains engine returns and refunds at Reco. There are two different cases. The first is when you change your mind. The second is when an engine is faulty. Different rules apply to each.

Can I send back an unopened engine for a refund?

Yes, if the engine is unopened. A change-of-mind return is our own policy. The law does not require it, but we follow it once we offer it.

These conditions apply:

  • Freight and logistics charges are not refunded.
  • You pay the freight to send the engine back to us.

Is there a restocking fee?

For a change-of-mind return, yes. We take it from your refund.

There is no restocking fee for a faulty engine.

Can I return an engine after fitting has started?

Not for change of mind. Once fitting has started, even partly, we cannot take the engine back for a refund.

This does not affect your rights if the engine is faulty. See below.

What if my engine is faulty?

A faulty engine is not a change-of-mind return. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply. These rights are called the consumer guarantees. No store policy can take them away.

What can I ask for?

What you are entitled to depends on how serious the problem is.

Swipe across the table to see all columns.

Type of problem What the law gives you
Major problem Your choice of a refund or a replacement. You may also claim compensation for other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage.
Minor problem We fix the problem or repair the engine, free of charge, within a reasonable time.

A major problem is one that would have stopped you buying the engine if you had known. It also covers an engine that is unsafe, or very different from its description. It also covers one that cannot do its normal job and cannot easily be fixed in a reasonable time.

If we cannot or will not fix a minor problem in a reasonable time, you can ask for a refund or replacement instead.

What happens when I report a fault?

  1. Stop driving. If you see a warning light, a leak or a fault, stop the vehicle.
  2. Contact us. Call 02 9737 0105 or email info@recoservices.net.au.
  3. Tell us what happened. Send a few photos and tell us what checks have been done.
  4. We assess it. The law lets us look at the engine before we offer a remedy.

Who pays to send a faulty engine back?

An engine is large and heavy. The ACCC says a business must collect, or pay to ship, faulty goods that are large, heavy or hard to remove. If we confirm the fault, we pay back the reasonable return costs you have already paid. Keep your receipts.

We give you a reasonable estimate of those costs first.

Our goods come with guarantees

Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.

Our warranty sits on top of these rights. It does not limit them.

Do these rules apply to trade buyers?

If you buy for a business, the consumer guarantees may apply in a different way. Mechanics and workshops, please talk to us about your order. See trade supply.

Where can I read more?

The ACCC explains these rights on its repair, replace, refund, cancel page. See also our terms of sale.

If you have any questions about a return, please feel free to give us a call.
