What is an engine repair?

An engine repair fixes a part or system that has failed. The rest of the engine stays as it is. Common examples are:

  • A failed head gasket. The head gasket seals the gap between the block and the cylinder head. It keeps combustion gas, coolant and oil apart.
  • A timing belt or chain fault. The timing belt or chain keeps the valves opening in time with the pistons. In many engines, a timing failure lets the valves hit the pistons.
  • Cylinder head damage. A head must sit flat on the block to seal. A warped head needs checking and machining. See cylinder head reconditioning.

When do you need it?

Watch for these signs:

  • White smoke from the exhaust. Coolant getting into a cylinder can cause it.
  • Overheating. Combustion gas leaking into the cooling system can make the engine run hot.
  • Coolant or oil loss with no clear leak.
  • A warning light, a leak or a new noise.

If you see any of these, stop driving. Driving on with low oil can let metal rub on metal and ruin the bearings. Call us before you drive it again.
