Performance engines
Performance engine builds in Sydney use the same machine shop skills as a standard rebuild. The difference is how far the work goes. The parts are measured, matched and balanced for the way the engine will be used.

What is a performance engine build?
A performance build starts with the same steps as any rebuild. The engine is stripped, cleaned, crack tested and measured. Then the work goes further.
- Blueprinting. Parts are measured closely and machined to exact figures for the build. This is a recognised trade skill in Australian engine reconditioning.
- Balancing. The rotating and moving parts, such as the crankshaft, rods and pistons, are balanced as a set. This is also a recognised trade skill.
- Finer finishes. Bearing makers ask for a finer journal finish on highly loaded cranks, such as racing engines.
- Crack testing. The crankshaft, rods and block are checked for cracks the eye cannot see. See crack testing.
- Careful assembly. Each clearance is measured as the engine goes together, and the figures are written down.
- Matched clearances. Bores are honed to the exact clearance the chosen pistons need.
When do you need it?
- You race. Racing engines carry high loads, so the finish and fit of each part matter more.
- You are adding power and want the engine built for it.
- You are rebuilding a modified engine and want it done to the same standard or better.
Tell us how the car will be used. A street engine and a race engine need different choices.
How we do it at Reco
Performance racing engines are one of the services at our Auburn machine shop. The machining is done at Auburn, alongside our other engine work.
A note on warranty
Our standard engine warranty does not cover performance modifications or tuning. Talk to us about warranty before you start a performance build.
What to tell us about your build
A good brief makes for a good quote. Before you call, have these ready:
- The engine and its engine code
- How the car will be used: street, track, drag or another class
- The power you are aiming for
- Any parts you have already bought
- Any date you need it by, such as a race meeting
What it costs
Every performance build is different, so each one is quoted on its own.
