Machine shop services
Our engine machine shop in Sydney is where the precise work happens. Every rebuild depends on parts that are the right size, shape and finish. A machine shop measures each part, then machines it back to the maker's figures. Ours is at Unit 1/28-30 Hampstead Rd, Auburn.

What are engine machine shop services?
Machine shop work brings worn engine parts back into spec. It starts with measuring. The bores, journals, bearing tunnels and block faces are checked for wear and shape. Then the parts that are out of spec are machined.
The main jobs are:
- Reboring and honing cylinders. Worn bores are cut to a new size, then honed to the final size and finish. See engine reboring.
- Sleeving cylinders. Fitting a sleeve restores a worn or damaged cylinder.
- Crankshaft grinding. Worn journals are ground round and true. See crankshaft grinding.
- Cylinder head work. Heads are tested, resurfaced and given valve work. See cylinder head reconditioning.
- Surface work on blocks. A block face must be flat for the head gasket to seal.
- Bearing tunnels and conrods. These are measured and repaired when they are out of shape.
- Crack testing. Parts are checked for cracks the eye cannot see. See crack testing.
- Balancing. Rotating and moving parts are balanced, often for performance engines.
These are the skills taught in the Australian trade qualification for engine reconditioning.
When do you need it?
- You are rebuilding an engine and the parts need machining before assembly.
- You are a mechanic with an engine on the bench that needs machine work you do not do in house.
- A part has failed, such as a bearing or a head, and the part under it needs checking.
- You want to know if an engine is worth rebuilding. Measuring and crack testing answer that question.
