Guide

Signs your 1KD-FTV needs replacing

White smoke and a rattle after a cold start can point to a leaking injector seat. A loud knock when cold, rough idle and poor economy can point to worn injectors. Sudden heavy knocking, black smoke, loss of power and the engine running on three cylinders can point to a cracked piston. Stop driving if you hear a sudden new knock.

Toyota 1KD-FTV engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The 1KD-FTV engine is Toyota's 3.0 litre common-rail turbo diesel from the Hilux, Hiace and Prado. Reported problems include worn injectors, leaking injector seats and cracked pistons on Euro 4 versions. We list a new 1KD-FTV long motor at $4,950 basic and $7,700 timed.

What is the 1KD-FTV engine?

The 1KD-FTV is a 3.0 litre (2,982 cc) four-cylinder turbo diesel with a cast iron block and an aluminium head. It uses common-rail direct injection (Toyota's D-4D), double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. A rubber timing belt drives one camshaft and gears drive the other. The turbo is a variable-nozzle type with an intercooler.

Which vehicles use the 1KD-FTV?

Our listings name the Toyota Hilux, Hiace and Prado, and say the engine suits various specs and can be set up to suit your model.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the 1KD-FTV?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Worn injectors. Injectors commonly wear out, often somewhere around 120,000 to 140,000 km.
  • Injector seat leaks on early engines. On some 2005 to 2007 engines the copper washers under the injectors leak. Combustion gas gets into the oil and makes sludge that can block the oil pick-up and starve the bearings. Revised seats arrived around August 2007.
  • Cracked pistons on Euro 4 engines. Engines from about 2006 to 2014 can crack pistons, most often between 100,000 and 150,000 km. Toyota issued a technical bulletin and revised parts, which reduced the failures but did not end them.
  • No Australian engine recall found. We found no Australian safety recall for the 1KD-FTV itself.

What are the signs a 1KD-FTV may need replacing?

White smoke and a rattle after a cold start can point to a leaking injector seat. A loud knock when cold, rough idle and poor economy can point to worn injectors. Sudden heavy knocking, black smoke, loss of power and the engine running on three cylinders can point to a cracked piston. Stop driving if you hear a sudden new knock.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a 1KD-FTV?

Injector faults on their own are a repair, if they are caught before they do damage. A cracked piston, or bearings starved of oil by sludge, usually means the engine needs a rebuild or a replacement. Ask whether the injectors on the vehicle are healthy, because they come across to the new engine.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own 1KD-FTV, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $4,950.

What should you ask before ordering a 1KD-FTV?

  1. Which Hilux, Hiace or Prado is it, by year and series, and which emissions version?
  2. Basic or timed? Who is fitting the timing kit if I buy the basic engine?
  3. Have the injectors been tested? Are they going onto the new engine?
  4. What caused the old engine to fail, and has it been fixed?

1KD-FTV FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my 1KD-FTV?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a 1KD-FTV for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
