Guide

Signs your 1KZ-TE needs replacing

Watch the temperature gauge on hills and in hot stop-start traffic. Bubbles in the coolant overflow, coolant loss or discoloured coolant, fast overheating, rough running and loss of power can all point to a cracked head.

Toyota 1KZ-TE engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The 1KZ-TE engine is Toyota's 3.0 litre turbo diesel from older Hilux and Prado models. Its main weakness is the cylinder head cracking, usually after overheating. We list a new timed 1KZ-TE long motor at $4,950.

Prices as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.

What is the 1KZ-TE engine?

The 1KZ-TE is a 3.0 litre (2,982 cc) four-cylinder turbo diesel with an aluminium head, a single overhead camshaft and two valves per cylinder. It uses indirect injection from an electronically controlled rotary pump. Gears drive the injection pump and a rubber belt drives the camshaft.

Which vehicles use the 1KZ-TE?

Our listing names the Toyota LandCruiser Prado 90 and 120 Series and the Hilux. Independent references list the 1KZ-TE in the sixth-generation Hilux (about 1997 to 2005), the Prado 90 Series (about 2000 to 2002 in Australia) and the Prado 120 Series (about 2003 to 2006).

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the 1KZ-TE?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Overheating. This engine does not tolerate heat well. Causes reported include a failed viscous fan hub, a blocked radiator, a stuck turbo wastegate, a split heater hose and a cooling system working hard under load.
  • Cracked cylinder heads. Head cracking is a known weakness, and a cooling system pressure test may not find the crack.
  • No Australian engine recall found. We found no Australian safety recall for the 1KZ-TE itself.

What are the signs a 1KZ-TE may need replacing?

Watch the temperature gauge on hills and in hot stop-start traffic. Bubbles in the coolant overflow, coolant loss or discoloured coolant, fast overheating, rough running and loss of power can all point to a cracked head.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a 1KZ-TE?

If only the head is cracked and the bottom end is healthy, a head replacement can be the repair. If the engine has been overheated hard or run on after the head cracked, the damage often goes further. Either way, the cooling system has to be fixed first.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own 1KZ-TE, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $4,950.

What should you ask before ordering a 1KZ-TE?

  1. Is it a Hilux or a Prado, and which series and year?
  2. Has the head been checked, and was the engine overheated?
  3. Has the cooling system (radiator, fan hub, hoses) been fixed or replaced?
  4. Do I want it fitted at your workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

1KZ-TE FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my 1KZ-TE?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a 1KZ-TE for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
