What is the 204PT engine?

The 2.0 Ingenium petrol is a four-cylinder turbo engine with an aluminium block, a twin-scroll turbo, twin camshafts with fully variable intake valve lift, 200 bar direct injection and a timing chain. Jaguar Land Rover announced it in 2017 in 200PS and 250PS tunes, with a 300PS version after.

What problems are reported with the 204PT?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

• Fuel rail recall. In 2018 Jaguar and Land Rover recalled some 2017 to 2018 2.0 petrol models in Australia because engine-mounted fuel rails could leak fuel in the engine bay, with a fire risk.
• Turbo oil pipe recall. A 2024 Australian recall covers some 2020 to 2024 Discovery Sport, Evoque and Velar with a turbo oil feed pipe that may not be tight. The listing does not name the engine, so check by VIN.
• Timing chain reports are mostly diesel. Published Ingenium timing chain complaints mainly concern the 2.0 diesel, not this petrol engine.

What are the signs a 204PT may need replacing?

A strong fuel smell, or fuel visible in the engine bay, needs a dealer check before the vehicle is driven. For engine wear, the general signs apply: a new rattle or knock, smoke, warning lights and loss of power.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a 204PT?

Check recall work with a Jaguar or Land Rover dealer first. If tests show the engine itself is damaged, compare a rebuild with a new long motor.
