Guide

Signs your 4HK1-TC needs replacing

Lack of power, poor revving, rough idle and hard starting, often with fuel rail pressure codes such as P0087 or P0088, point to the fuel pressure control side. Unexplained coolant loss or air in the cooling system can point to a leaking EGR cooler, which is easy to mistake for a head gasket.

Isuzu 4HK1-TC engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The 4HK1-TC engine is Isuzu's 5.2 litre four-cylinder turbo diesel from N Series and F Series trucks. Isuzu bulletins describe a fuel pressure control valve that can stick and EGR coolers that can leak. We list a new 4HK1-TC long motor at $7,250.

What is the 4HK1-TC engine?

The 4HK1-TC is a 5.2 litre (5,193 cc) four-cylinder, 16-valve turbo diesel with a single overhead camshaft and high-pressure common-rail injection from a Denso supply pump, with a suction control valve that regulates rail pressure.

Which vehicles use the 4HK1-TC?

Our listing names the Isuzu 4HK1-TC 5.2.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the 4HK1-TC?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Fuel pressure control. An Isuzu bulletin describes the supply pump's suction control valve working intermittently, causing lack of power, an engine that won't rev, idle vibration and hard starting. Blocked or non-genuine fuel filters, air leaks and dirty fuel are checked first. (US-market bulletin.)
  • EGR cooler leaks. Another Isuzu bulletin covers EGR coolers that leak coolant into the exhaust and cylinders, or exhaust gas into the cooling system. (US-market bulletin.)
  • N Series recalls. Two Australian recalls on 2006 to 2007 N Series trucks covered an oil pipe eye bolt and a supply pump pipe. The register does not say which engine, so check by VIN.

What are the signs a 4HK1-TC may need replacing?

Lack of power, poor revving, rough idle and hard starting, often with fuel rail pressure codes such as P0087 or P0088, point to the fuel pressure control side. Unexplained coolant loss or air in the cooling system can point to a leaking EGR cooler, which is easy to mistake for a head gasket.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a 4HK1-TC?

Fuel pressure and EGR cooler faults are repairs if caught early. An EGR cooler leak that let coolant into the cylinders can damage the engine, and that is where a rebuild or replacement comes in.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own 4HK1-TC, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $7,250.

Freight is quoted per job. We fit engines at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. Fitting jobs need a 50% deposit. Engine-only orders are paid in full before dispatch.

What should you ask before ordering a 4HK1-TC?

  1. Which truck, model and year, and which 4HK1 rating?
  2. Has the EGR cooler been pressure tested?
  3. Is the fuel system healthy? The supply pump and injectors come across from your old engine.
  4. Do I want it fitted at a Sydney or Melbourne workshop, or sent to my workshop?

4HK1-TC FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my 4HK1-TC?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a 4HK1-TC for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
