Guide

Signs your 2AZ-FE needs replacing

Oil dropping between services with no leak you can see is the classic sign. Toyota's own test treated more than about one litre every 1,930 km as too much. Blue smoke from the exhaust can go with it. If the oil light comes on, stop the engine: running low on oil does far more damage than the oil burning itself.

Toyota 2AZ-FE engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The 2AZ-FE engine is Toyota's 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, used in the RAV4, Camry and Tarago among others. Its best-known problem is burning oil past the piston rings on later engines. We list a new timed 2AZ-FE long motor at $4,450.

What is the 2AZ-FE engine?

The 2AZ-FE is a 2.4 litre (2,362 cc) four-cylinder petrol engine with an aluminium block and head. It has double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing on the intake camshaft and port fuel injection. A timing chain drives the camshafts, not a belt. From about 2006 Toyota raised the compression slightly and added oil jets under the pistons.

Our listing names the Toyota RAV4.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the 2AZ-FE?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Oil burning. The problem most often reported is heavy oil use on later engines, as oil gets past the piston rings. Owners usually notice it from around 100,000 km. In the United States Toyota issued a repair bulletin that replaced the pistons and rings, which is an engine-out job; that program did not apply in Australia.
  • No Australian engine recall found. We found no Australian safety recall for the 2AZ-FE itself.

What are the signs a 2AZ-FE may need replacing?

Oil dropping between services with no leak you can see is the classic sign. Toyota's own test treated more than about one litre every 1,930 km as too much. Blue smoke from the exhaust can go with it. If the oil light comes on, stop the engine: running low on oil does far more damage than the oil burning itself.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a 2AZ-FE?

Oil burning on this engine comes from the rings, so topping up only buys time. Fixing it properly means new pistons and rings, which is most of a rebuild. On a high-kilometre RAV4 or Camry, compare that against a new long motor.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own 2AZ-FE, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $4,450.

Freight is quoted per job. We fit engines at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. Fitting jobs need a 50% deposit. Engine-only orders are paid in full before dispatch.

What should you ask before ordering a 2AZ-FE?

  1. Which RAV4, Camry or Tarago is it, by year and series?
  2. Is the oil use from burning or from a leak? Has a compression or leak-down test been done?
  3. Is the cooling system in good order? Overheating damages an aluminium engine fast.
  4. Do I want it fitted at your Sydney or Melbourne workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

2AZ-FE FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my 2AZ-FE?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a 2AZ-FE for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
