Signs your 4M40T needs replacing

Coolant loss, overheating and bubbles in the overflow bottle are the signs owners describe for a cracked head. Because a crack inside a port may not show on a pressure test, a combustion gas (block) test is worth doing too.

Mitsubishi 4M40T engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The 4M40T engine is Mitsubishi's 2.8 litre turbo diesel from the 1990s and early 2000s Pajero and the Triton. Owners most often report head cracking after overheating, though that rests on owner reports rather than Mitsubishi documents. We list a new 4M40T long motor at $5,250.

What is the 4M40T engine?

The 4M40 is a 2.8 litre (2,835 cc) four-cylinder diesel with a single overhead camshaft, two valves per cylinder, an aluminium head with swirl chambers, and indirect injection from a distributor pump (mechanical on early engines, electronic later). Road versions are turbocharged and intercooled.

Which vehicles use the 4M40T?

Our listing names the Mitsubishi Pajero 1993 to 2002 and Triton 1996 to 2006. Independent references list the 4M40 turbo diesel in the NL and NM Pajero (the NM until May 2002, when the 3.2 litre 4M41 replaced it) and in the MK Triton, which moved from a non-turbo 2.8 diesel to the 2.8 turbo diesel in 2003.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the 4M40T?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Head cracking after overheating. This is the problem owners report most, usually after the engine has run hot. The evidence is owner forums rather than Mitsubishi documents, so treat it as a strong pattern to check for, not a confirmed design fault.
  • Not the 4M41 chain problem. The well-known Pajero timing chain guide problem and recall concern the later 3.2 litre 4M41, not the 4M40.
  • No Australian engine recall found. Recalls found for the MK Triton are not engine related.

What are the signs a 4M40T may need replacing?

Coolant loss, overheating and bubbles in the overflow bottle are the signs owners describe for a cracked head. Because a crack inside a port may not show on a pressure test, a combustion gas (block) test is worth doing too.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a 4M40T?

A cracked head on an engine with a healthy bottom end can be a head repair. An engine overheated hard, or with low compression, is a rebuild or replacement. Our 4M40T head or engine guide walks through it.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own 4M40T, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $5,250.

4M40T FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my 4M40T?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a 4M40T for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
