Guide

Signs your G4KG needs replacing

Oil dropping faster than a litre every 1,000 km, knocking or tapping from cold, and smoke are the signs reported. If oil pressure is lost, the engine can seize, so watch the oil level closely on a high-kilometre van.

Hyundai G4KG engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The G4KG engine is Hyundai's 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol from the iLoad and iMax. The problem reported most often is heavy oil use and a cold knock from scored cylinder bores, which needs a rebuild or replacement to fix. We list a new G4KG long motor at $5,250.

What is the G4KG engine?

The G4KG is a 2.4 litre (2,359 cc) four-cylinder petrol engine from Hyundai's Theta II family, with an aluminium block and head, double overhead camshafts, variable valve timing and port fuel injection. It is the version used in rear-drive vans like the iLoad. One Australian reference calls the iLoad petrol a G4KE, which is the front-drive version, so check the code stamped on your engine.

Which vehicles use the G4KG?

Our listing names the Hyundai iLoad and iMax, with years given as 2008 to 2018 in one place and 2009 to 2018 in another.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the G4KG?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Oil use and cold knock. Some 2008 to 2017 iLoad 2.4 petrol engines use more than a litre of oil per 1,000 km and knock or tap when cold. The cause given is scoring of the cylinder bores, and the fix is a rebuild or a new block. Dealers confirm it with a sealed-dipstick oil use test.
  • Class action. The iLoad and iMax 2.4 are named in a Federal Court class action against Hyundai over Theta II engines. These are allegations, not findings.
  • Recalls on the vehicle. A 2009 recall covered throttle cables on some early petrol vans, and a 2025 recall covers a fuse box to alternator cable on 2016 to 2018 vans. Check both have been done.

What are the signs a G4KG may need replacing?

Oil dropping faster than a litre every 1,000 km, knocking or tapping from cold, and smoke are the signs reported. If oil pressure is lost, the engine can seize, so watch the oil level closely on a high-kilometre van.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a G4KG?

Scored bores can't be fixed with a top-up or an additive. The fix is a rebuild with machining, or a new engine. Compare the rebuild quote with a new long motor fitted.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own G4KG, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $5,250.

What should you ask before ordering a G4KG?

  1. Is it a petrol G4KG or the D4CB diesel? Check the code on the block.
  2. What year is the van, by the build plate?
  3. Has an oil use test been done, and what did it show?
  4. Do I want it fitted at your workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

G4KG FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my G4KG?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a G4KG for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
