Signs your L3 needs replacing

A loud tick for a moment at cold start, a hunting idle, stalling, rough running or a no-start are the signs reported. Most point to parts on the engine rather than the engine itself.

Mazda L3 engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The Mazda L3 engine is the 2.3 litre MZR petrol from the 2002 to 2007 Mazda6 and the Mazda3 SP23. Known faults are mostly fixable: a start-up tick from the valve timing actuator, stalling and throttle carbon. We list a new timed L3 long motor at $5,450.

Prices as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.

What is the L3 engine?

The L3 (L3-VE) is a 2.3 litre (2,261 cc) four-cylinder petrol engine with an aluminium block, iron liners, an aluminium head and balance shafts. It has double overhead camshafts, variable intake cam timing, a variable-length intake, port fuel injection and a timing chain. The turbo L3 in the MPS models is a different version.

Which vehicles use the L3?

Our listing names the Mazda L3 2.3 CVVT.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the L3?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Start-up tick. On earlier Mazda6 2.3s the variable valve timing actuator can tick loudly at start-up; a Mazda US bulletin replaced the actuator.
  • Low-speed stalling. Cars built before February 2007 could stall at low speed after a light lift of the throttle; a software update fixed it.
  • Throttle body carbon. Carbon in the throttle body can cause a hunting idle and stalling at a stop.
  • Timing shift. Cam timing can shift if the key in the crankshaft sprocket is not seated fully, causing rough running or a no-start.
  • Oil filter housing. The oil filter housing can leak if damaged by the wrong filter tool.

What are the signs a L3 may need replacing?

A loud tick for a moment at cold start, a hunting idle, stalling, rough running or a no-start are the signs reported. Most point to parts on the engine rather than the engine itself.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a L3?

Most reported L3 faults are repairs. A new engine makes sense when the engine itself is worn or damaged, for example after overheating or oil loss, or after a timing fault that let the valves hit the pistons.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own L3, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $5,450.

Freight is quoted per job. We fit engines at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. Fitting jobs need a 50% deposit. Engine-only orders are paid in full before dispatch.

What should you ask before ordering a L3?

  1. Is it a Mazda6 or a Mazda3 SP23, and what year?
  2. Is it the non-turbo L3? The MPS turbo engine is different.
  3. Which tests showed the engine itself is the problem?
  4. Do I want it fitted at your workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

L3 FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my L3?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a L3 for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
