Guide

Signs your YD25 needs replacing

A rattle from the front of the engine points to the timing chain: get it checked before it gets worse. Falling coolant with no puddle, and coolant stains around the EGR pipes, point to the EGR cooler. Limp mode at about 2,000 rpm with code P0546 points to an exhaust temperature sensor.

Nissan YD25 engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The YD25 engine is Nissan's 2.5 litre turbo diesel from the D22 and D40 Navara and the R51 Pathfinder. Its best-known problem is the single-row timing chain stretching, which can let the valves hit the pistons. We list a new YD25 long motor with the AMC cylinder head, Euro 3, at $6,950.

What is the YD25 engine?

The YD25 (YD25DDTi) is a 2.5 litre (2,488 cc) four-cylinder turbo diesel with a cast iron block and an aluminium head, double overhead camshafts and chain-driven timing: a single-row lower chain and a double-row upper chain. Early versions used an electronic rotary injection pump; later versions use common rail. Most have a variable geometry turbo and an intercooler. Power varies a lot by model and year.

Which vehicles use the YD25?

Our listing names the Nissan Navara D22 and D40 and the Pathfinder R51, with the AMC cylinder head, Euro 3. Independent references list the YD25 in the D22 Navara from 2008 to about 2015, the D40 Navara from 2005 to about 2015 and the R51 Pathfinder from 2005 to 2013.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the YD25?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Timing chain stretch. The single-row lower chain can stretch, and its guides and the vacuum pump sprocket can wear. If it stretches far enough the valves can hit the pistons. One independent reference suggests renewing the chain and tensioners before 80,000 km and checking every 40,000 km after; that is its advice, not a Nissan schedule. CarsGuide calls chain rattle a regular D40 complaint.
  • EGR cooler leaks. The EGR cooler can corrode or split and leak coolant into the exhaust. Left alone it can overheat the engine and damage the head gasket.
  • Exhaust temperature sensors. A 2013 Nissan service campaign replaced exhaust gas temperature sensors on 2012 and 2013 D40 and R51 diesels because of a high failure rate.

What are the signs a YD25 may need replacing?

A rattle from the front of the engine points to the timing chain: get it checked before it gets worse. Falling coolant with no puddle, and coolant stains around the EGR pipes, point to the EGR cooler. Limp mode at about 2,000 rpm with code P0546 points to an exhaust temperature sensor.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a YD25?

A chain caught while it is only rattling is a repair. If the chain has jumped and the valves have hit the pistons, the engine needs a rebuild or replacement. If an EGR cooler leak has overheated the engine, check the head and gasket before deciding.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own YD25, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $6,950.

Freight is quoted per job. We fit engines at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. Fitting jobs need a 50% deposit. Engine-only orders are paid in full before dispatch.

What should you ask before ordering a YD25?

  1. D22, D40 or R51, what year, and which emissions version?
  2. Has the timing chain jumped, or is it only rattling?
  3. Has the EGR cooler been checked for leaks?
  4. Do I want it fitted at your workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

YD25 FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my YD25?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a YD25 for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
