Guide

Signs your D4CB needs replacing

Loss of turbo boost, blue or black smoke, oil in the intake pipes and a knock from the bottom end can all point to an oil-related failure. Stop the engine at once if the oil pressure warning shows.

Hyundai D4CB engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The D4CB engine is Hyundai's 2.5 litre common-rail turbo diesel from the iLoad and iMax vans. The failures reported most often come from oil: sludge from stretched services can block the turbo oil feed and starve the bearings. We list a new D4CB long motor at $5,650 basic and $7,450 timed.

Prices as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.

What is the D4CB engine?

The D4CB is a 2.5 litre (2,497 cc) four-cylinder turbo diesel from Hyundai's "A" engine family. It has double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, common-rail direct injection and a chain-driven camshaft drive. In the iLoad, automatics use a variable geometry turbo; manuals from August 2012 use a simpler wastegate turbo. Power and torque differ by year and gearbox.

Which vehicles use the D4CB?

Our listings name the Hyundai iLoad and iMax, 2014 to 2019. Independent references list the 2.5 CRDi in the iLoad (TQ-V) and iMax (TQ-W) from 2008 to 2021, and the same engine family in the Kia Sorento BL diesel.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the D4CB?

These are problems reported for this engine family in the sources we list below. Not every engine gets them, and a symptom is never a diagnosis. We found no reputable source for the timing chain or injector failures sometimes claimed for the D4CB online, so we don't repeat them here.

  • Oil sludge. Turbo and engine failures in iLoad diesels have been put down to sludge starving the turbo and bearings, usually where oil changes were stretched. Hard-working vans may need shorter oil change intervals than the book.
  • Turbo oil feed line. The narrow oil feed to the turbo can block with sludge and kill the turbo.
  • Intake soot. Soot and oil mist from the emissions systems can build up as black deposits in the intake.
  • Electrical recall. A 2025 recall covers 2016 to 2018 iLoad and iMax for a cable sheath between the fuse box and alternator that can break down. It is not an engine fault, but check it has been done.

What are the signs a D4CB may need replacing?

Loss of turbo boost, blue or black smoke, oil in the intake pipes and a knock from the bottom end can all point to an oil-related failure. Stop the engine at once if the oil pressure warning shows.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a D4CB?

A blocked turbo oil feed caught early may only cost a turbo and a clean-out. If the bearings have been starved of oil, the engine usually needs a rebuild or replacement. In either case the oil system has to be cleaned out and the turbo feed replaced, or the new parts fail the same way.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own D4CB, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $5,650.

What should you ask before ordering a D4CB?

  1. Is it a diesel D4CB or the petrol G4KG? The iLoad came with both.
  2. What year and series is the van, and which build do I need, basic or timed?
  3. Has the turbo and its oil feed line been checked or replaced?
  4. How hard does the van work, and what oil change interval should I use after running in?

D4CB FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my D4CB?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a D4CB for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
