2GR-FE engine replacement: what should Kluger, Aurion and Tarago owners check first?

Our 2GR-FE listing names:

• Toyota Aurion, GSV40 and GSV50, 2006 to 2017;
• Toyota Kluger, GSU40/45 and GSU50/55, 2007 to 2017;
• Toyota Tarago, GSR50/55, 2006 to 2019.

Make, model, year, series, rego and VIN, and the code on the engine. The series codes above matter, because one badge covers several generations. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

Ask your mechanic what the tests showed. On the 2GR-FE, two oil-related problems are reported :

• The VVT-i oil hose. On earlier engines a rubber section of the oil feed hose to the variable valve timing can perish and leak. Signs include oil at the back of the engine, an unusual noise and the oil pressure light. An engine that lost oil pressure this way may have damaged bearings.
• Stretched services. Oil can thicken if services are pushed out, which can starve the engine of oil.

If either is the cause, it needs fixing on the vehicle before the new engine runs.

Check with a Toyota dealer using the VIN. For example, about 650 XU50 Klugers built in May and June 2014 were recalled for a fuel delivery pipe that could leak fuel. That recall was for the fuel pipe, not the engine, but a fuel smell on any vehicle needs checking before anything else.

It is listed as remanufactured, not new.
