What comes with a long motor, and what does your mechanic reuse?
What is in a long bare motor?
Most engines we list are long bare motors. In Hank's words, a long bare engine is the short engine plus the cylinder head bolted on. The short engine is the block, crankshaft, pistons and conrods assembled.
So the core of the engine, the parts that wear and fail inside, are in the box. The parts that bolt on to the outside are not.
What is the difference between "basic" and "timed"?
- Long bare, basic (not timed): the short engine plus the cylinder head. Your mechanic fits the timing kit.
- Long bare, timed: the same, plus the timing done. The timing chain or belt kit is installed, with the timing covers and valve covers on.
That is why the same engine can have two prices. Our 1KD-FTV, for example, is listed at $4,950 as a basic long bare and $7,700 timed. Our D4CB is listed at $5,650 basic and $7,450 timed. (Prices as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.)
A timed engine means less work at the bench for your mechanic.
Which parts move across from your old engine?
On our fitting jobs, the labour covers moving your vehicle's original external parts onto the new engine.
- turbocharger or supercharger, where fitted;
- injectors, injection pump, fuel rails and pipes;
- intake and exhaust manifolds;
- starter motor and alternator;
- power steering pump and air-conditioning compressor;
- drive belts, pulleys and tensioners;
- sensors, wiring harness and glow plugs;
- engine mounts and brackets, hoses and heat shields.
Not every vehicle has every item, and some may be different on your engine. Anything not listed in the quote as new is the vehicle's original part.
Are the reused parts covered by the warranty?
No. Our warranty covers the parts we supply and the work we do. Original parts that come across are your vehicle's own, and we cannot guarantee how long they will last. We check what we can when we fit the engine. If one of those parts is worn, we tell you and quote it as an extra.
This matters most with the turbo.
What do you need on top of the engine?
Budget for:
- fitting labour, whether it is our workshop or your mechanic;
- fluids and filters: oil, oil filter, coolant, and anything drained on the way out;
- the timing kit, if you buy a basic long bare;
- any original part found worn when it comes off.
How do you check what comes with a particular engine?
Ask us before you order. Every engine is a little different, and the written quote is what counts. If there is a part you are counting on, name it in your enquiry and we confirm it in writing.
Ask us about your engine
Tell us your vehicle and the engine you are looking at in the enquiry form, or call 02 9737 0105. We list what is in the box and what moves across before you pay.
