Is a new 1HZ engine worth it for a LandCruiser you tour or work in?

In short: For a LandCruiser that is set up the way you want and has a sound body and chassis, a new 1HZ engine is often worth it: our new timed long motor is listed at $7,950. It makes less sense if the vehicle needs other big repairs, or if you were planning to change vehicles anyway.

Price as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.

What is the 1HZ, and which LandCruisers have it?

The 1HZ is Toyota's 4.2 litre six-cylinder diesel. It has no factory turbo, a mechanical injection pump and a timing belt, and it is known for being slow but tough. Independent references list it in the LandCruiser 70 Series (including the Troop Carrier), the 80 Series from 1990 to 1998, the 105 Series (the base models in the 100 Series range) from 1998 to 2007, and some Coaster buses.

Our 1HZ listing names the LandCruiser 75, 78, 79, 80 and 100 Series. Confirm your vehicle's exact engine and series with us before ordering.

What does a new 1HZ from Reco cost?

Our new 1HZ is a timed long bare motor, listed at $7,950. Timed means the timing parts are fitted and set, with the covers on.

On top of the engine: fitting labour, fluids and filters, any worn outside parts, and freight or a tow. See what a replacement engine costs.

When is a new 1HZ worth it?

  • The vehicle is set up for how you use it. Drawers, a long-range tank, a canopy, a tray, suspension. Buying another LandCruiser means paying for all of that again.
  • The body and chassis are sound. Check for rust and cracks before you spend money on the engine.
  • You plan to keep it for years. A new engine pays back over time, not in the first six months.
  • The gearbox and driveline are healthy, or budgeted for.

When might it not be worth it?

  • The vehicle needs other large repairs: chassis, gearbox, transfer case.
  • You were already planning to change vehicles.
  • The total job comes close to what a comparable, sound LandCruiser would cost you.

What should be fixed before a new 1HZ goes in?

Whatever caused the old engine to fail. Our 1HZ engine problems article covers what is reported on this engine. Cooling system condition matters on any engine, and so does the air intake on a vehicle that sees dust. Damage from overheating is not covered by the engine warranty.

What about touring and towing straight after fitting?

Give it time. Use running-in oil for the first 1,000 km, vary your speed, and avoid heavy towing until the engine has settled in. Plan the big trip after the first service and check-up, not before. See running in a new engine.

Can you rebuild your old 1HZ instead?

If it is serviceable, yes. We strip it, inspect it, and give you a fixed quote for the rebuild. If it isn't, there is a teardown fee for the labour, and a new engine is usually the answer.
