Hyundai and Kia G6DH engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The G6DH engine is Hyundai and Kia's 3.3 litre direct-injected V6, best known in Australia in the 2015 to 2020 Kia Carnival YP. No Australian recall for the engine itself was found, and some other 3.3 V6 models use a different code. We list a new timed G6DH long motor at $8,950.

Prices as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.

What is the G6DH engine?

The G6DH is a 3.3 litre (3,342 cc) V6 petrol engine from the Lambda II family, with an alloy block and heads, double overhead camshafts on each bank, variable timing on intake and exhaust camshafts, petrol direct injection and timing chains.

Which vehicles use the G6DH?

Our listing names the Kia Carnival and Sorento, and the Hyundai Genesis and Santa Fe. The only Australian use we could confirm from independent references is the Kia Carnival YP (2015 to 2020). References say the Australian Sorento UM 3.3 V6 is the port-injected G6DF, and the Australian Genesis used a 3.8 V6, the G6DJ. A 3.3 V6 Santa Fe DM is not confirmed as sold here.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the G6DH?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • No Australian engine recall found. Australian Carnival YP recalls touching the engine bay cover an alternator terminal that could overheat and a fuel supply pipe that could leak, not the engine internals.
  • US head gasket and head bolt investigation. In the US, regulators investigated power loss from head gasket or head bolt failures on 3.3 Lambda II Sorentos, and Kia extended the warranty there, including the Sedona (the US Carnival). US cover only.
  • Fuel use. Reviews note the Carnival's 3.3 V6 is thirsty, which is a running-cost point rather than a fault.

What are the signs a G6DH may need replacing?

Coolant or oil loss, a rising temperature gauge, smoke from the engine bay or a sudden loss of power need checking straight away. A knock that gets louder means stop driving.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a G6DH?

A head gasket or head bolt failure caught early can be a head repair. If the engine was overheated or run low on oil, a rebuild or replacement is more likely.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own G6DH, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $8,950.

Freight is quoted per job. We fit engines at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. Fitting jobs need a 50% deposit. Engine-only orders are paid in full before dispatch.

What should you ask before ordering a G6DH?

  1. Is it a Carnival YP? If it is another 3.3 V6, read the engine code first.
  2. Have the recalls on the vehicle been done? A Kia dealer can check the VIN.
  3. Is the GDI high-pressure pump and injection system healthy? It comes across from your old engine.
  4. Do I want it fitted at your workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

G6DH FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my G6DH?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a G6DH for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
