Guide

Signs your TD27 needs replacing

With little engine-specific evidence, use the general signs: hard starting, heavy smoke, a knock, overheating, coolant or oil loss and low oil pressure. A compression test is the quickest way to know whether a tired TD27 is worn out or only needs its injection system set up.

Nissan TD27 engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The TD27 engine is Nissan's 2.7 litre four-cylinder diesel from older Navaras and the Terrano II. It has a good reputation, and reputable sources document few faults, so test before you condemn it. We list a new TD27 long motor, with a 24 mm injector hole, at $5,350.

Prices as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.

What is the TD27 engine?

The TD27 is a 2.7 litre (2,663 cc) four-cylinder diesel with overhead valves worked by pushrods, two valves per cylinder and a gear-driven camshaft, so there is no cam belt or chain. It uses indirect injection into swirl chambers. Versions include the non-turbo TD27, the turbo TD27T, the intercooled TD27Ti and the electronically controlled TD27ETi.

Which vehicles use the TD27?

Our listing names the Nissan Navara and Pathfinder, and notes a 24 mm injector hole. Independent references list the non-turbo TD27 in the D22 Navara DX cab chassis (1997 to 2001) and the D21 Navara, and the TD27Ti in the R20 Terrano II (1997 to 1999).

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the TD27?

There is not much on record for this engine. These are the points we found, from the sources below.

  • Few documented faults. No independent Australian reference we checked lists a TD27-specific fault, and the non-turbo version has a strong reliability reputation.
  • No engine recall found. We found no recall relating to the TD27 engine.

What are the signs a TD27 may need replacing?

With little engine-specific evidence, use the general signs: hard starting, heavy smoke, a knock, overheating, coolant or oil loss and low oil pressure. A compression test is the quickest way to know whether a tired TD27 is worn out or only needs its injection system set up.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a TD27?

Injection timing, injector and cooling faults are repairs. Worn bores, a cracked head or bearing damage confirmed by tests mean a rebuild or a new engine.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own TD27, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $5,350.

Freight is quoted per job. We fit engines at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. Fitting jobs need a 50% deposit. Engine-only orders are paid in full before dispatch.

What should you ask before ordering a TD27?

  1. Which Navara or Terrano is it, what year, and is it turbo?
  2. Does the injector hole size match? Our listing notes 24 mm.
  3. Which tests showed it is the engine itself?
  4. Do I want it fitted at your workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

TD27 FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my TD27?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a TD27 for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
