Signs your G4KJ needs replacing

A rhythmic knock that rises with engine speed, the engine or oil pressure light, or stalling while driving can point to bearing wear: stop driving. Heavy oil use and a cold knock or tap can point to scored bores.

Hyundai and Kia G4KJ engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The G4KJ engine is the 2.4 litre direct-injected petrol from Hyundai and Kia's Theta II family. It has Australian recalls for bearing wear and debris on some engines, and reports of oil use from scored bores. We list a new timed late G4KJ long motor for 2016-on vehicles at $6,850.

Prices as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.

What is the G4KJ engine?

The G4KJ is a 2.4 litre (2,359 cc) four-cylinder petrol engine with an aluminium block and head, double overhead camshafts, variable timing on both camshafts and petrol direct injection (GDI). It is naturally aspirated; the turbo version is a different code.

Which vehicles use the G4KJ?

Our listing names the Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe, and the Kia Sportage and Optima, 2016 onwards (late G4KJ). Independent references list the G4KJ in the Hyundai i45, Santa Fe DM and TM, ix35 (2014 to 2015 Elite and Highlander), Sonata LF, Kia Optima TF and JF, Sportage QL (2016 to 2021) and Sorento XM (2013).

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the G4KJ?

These problems are reported in the sources listed below. Not every engine gets them. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

  • Debris recall (Hyundai). In 2017 Hyundai recalled 9,672 i45 and Santa Fe DM 2.4 GDI engines in Australia because debris from assembly could cause engine failure.
  • Bearing recall (Kia). In 2017 Kia recalled 4,963 Optimas built 2010 to 2014 because machining errors could wear the bearings early. Kia's bulletin traced it to metal swarf and an uneven crankpin finish restricting oil to the connecting rod bearings.
  • Scored bores and oil use. On the Sonata LF 2.4 GDI, high oil use and a cold knock have been blamed on scored cylinder bores; the fix is a rebuild or new block.
  • Class actions. Federal Court class actions against Hyundai and Kia name G4KJ vehicles. These are allegations, not findings.

What are the signs a G4KJ may need replacing?

A rhythmic knock that rises with engine speed, the engine or oil pressure light, or stalling while driving can point to bearing wear: stop driving. Heavy oil use and a cold knock or tap can point to scored bores.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a G4KJ?

Ask a dealer, with the VIN, whether a recall applies to your vehicle before anything else. Bearing failure or scored bores mean a rebuild or a replacement engine.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own G4KJ, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $6,850.

Freight is quoted per job. We fit engines at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. Fitting jobs need a 50% deposit. Engine-only orders are paid in full before dispatch.

What should you ask before ordering a G4KJ?

  1. Is it an early or late G4KJ? Our engine is the late version for 2016 onwards.
  2. Has a Hyundai or Kia dealer checked the VIN for recalls?
  3. Is the high-pressure fuel pump healthy? It comes across from your old engine.
  4. Do I want it fitted at your workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

G4KJ FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my G4KJ?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a G4KJ for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
