Guide

Signs your D4EB needs replacing

With little engine-specific evidence, use the general signs: hard starting, rough idle, smoke, a new knock, loss of power, coolant or oil loss, and warning lights. A diesel with a faulty injector can damage its pistons, so don't ignore a misfire. Ask your mechanic for test results before deciding.

Hyundai D4EB engine: vehicles, problems and replacement options

The D4EB engine is Hyundai's 2.2 litre common-rail turbo diesel from the 2006 to 2009 Santa Fe and the diesel Grandeur. Few engine faults are documented for it in reputable sources, so diagnosis matters more than reputation. We list a new timed D4EB long motor at $5,250.

Prices as listed on our store on 15 October 2026.

Which vehicles use the D4EB?

Our listing names the Hyundai Grandeur and Santa Fe, 2006 to 2009. Independent references list the D4EB in the Santa Fe CM Series I (2006 to 2009) and the Grandeur TG Series II diesel (November 2008 to 2011). The 2009 to 2012 Santa Fe CM Series II uses a different engine, the D4HB, so it is not a D4EB.

Model names and years overlap. So we check the fit from your VIN, series and current engine before we quote. See will this engine fit my vehicle.

What problems are reported with the D4EB?

Reputable sources document very little that goes wrong with the D4EB itself. These are the points we found, from the sources below.

  • Early fuel filter fault. A Hyundai bulletin covered some early 2006 Santa Fe diesels with a faulty fuel filter cartridge that caused poor acceleration.
  • Idle clatter. A review of the CM Santa Fe notes noticeable diesel clatter at idle. That is a character point rather than a fault.
  • Watch the series. Recalls and bulletins for the later CM Series II diesel apply to the D4HB engine, not the D4EB.

What are the signs a D4EB may need replacing?

With little engine-specific evidence, use the general signs: hard starting, rough idle, smoke, a new knock, loss of power, coolant or oil loss, and warning lights. A diesel with a faulty injector can damage its pistons, so don't ignore a misfire. Ask your mechanic for test results before deciding.

Should you repair, rebuild or replace a D4EB?

Fuel system faults are usually repairs. Internal damage confirmed by testing means a rebuild or replacement.

Our options, in short:

  • Repair it, if the fault is in a part bolted to the engine, not the engine itself.
  • Rebuild your own D4EB, if it is serviceable. We strip it, inspect it and give you a fixed quote. If not, there is a teardown fee for the labour.
  • Replace it with a new long motor from our range below, from $5,250.

Freight is quoted per job. We fit engines at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. Fitting jobs need a 50% deposit. Engine-only orders are paid in full before dispatch.

What should you ask before ordering a D4EB?

  1. Is the vehicle a CM Series I Santa Fe (2006 to 2009) or a Grandeur diesel? A Series II Santa Fe is a different engine.
  2. Which tests showed it is the engine itself?
  3. Are the injectors and turbo healthy? They come across to the new engine.
  4. Do I want it fitted at your workshop, or sent to my mechanic?

D4EB FAQs

Should I replace or rebuild my D4EB?

We can assess your own engine for reconditioning. We strip, clean and inspect it to establish whether it is serviceable, then give a fixed rebuild quote. A teardown fee applies if it cannot be rebuilt. We also check replacement-engine options for your vehicle.

Can you fit a D4EB for me?

Fitting is not included in the price and is quoted separately. Fitting is available at our Sydney and Melbourne workshops. We first check that the engine suits your vehicle.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting bookings depend on the workshop queue. Allow roughly one to three weeks, depending on the job and workshop availability. This is a guide, not a guaranteed completion time; confirm the timing for your vehicle when enquiring.
