How much does a Toyota Hilux 1KD-FTV engine replacement cost in Australia?

In short: For a Hilux 1KD-FTV engine replacement, our new long motor is listed at $4,950 as a basic long bare and $7,700 timed. The full job adds fitting labour, fluids and filters, the timing kit if you buy the basic engine, any worn outside parts such as the turbo or injectors, and freight or a tow. We quote the total before you pay.

What else goes into the total?

Cost line What it covers Where the number comes from
Engine Basic or timed long motor Listed price above
Timing kit Only if you buy the basic engine Your mechanic or our quote
Worn outside parts Turbo, injectors, water pump, hoses, if found worn Quoted before we fit them
Freight or tow Engine shipped to your mechanic, or the Hilux towed to us Quoted per job

Why is the timed engine $2,750 more?

The timed engine arrives with the timing kit fitted and set, and the covers on. With the basic engine, your mechanic buys and fits the timing kit and sets it up, so that cost and the time move onto the workshop bill instead.

Which parts usually come across from the old 1KD?

On a long motor, the outside parts move across: the turbo, injectors, injection pump and common rail, manifolds, starter, alternator, sensors and wiring. They are your Hilux's own parts, so they are not covered by the engine warranty. That is why it pays to check them while the engine is out, especially the turbo and the injectors on a 1KD.

How much does freight add?

It depends on where the engine is going. A metro workshop with a forklift is the cheapest delivery. A country address that needs a tail-lift truck can be $300 to $400 more. If the Hilux is near Sydney or Melbourne, we can also arrange a tow to our workshop and fit it there.

How do you pay?

  • We fit it: a 50% deposit books the job and holds the engine for your Hilux. Jobs take one to three weeks depending on the queue.
  • Engine only: paid in full before it is released for shipping.
  • Bank transfer or card over the phone. Trade buyers get about 5% off.

Is it worth putting a new engine in your Hilux?

Often, if the rest of the vehicle is sound. Work through our worksheet with your numbers.
