What does an engine test video show, and what doesn't it prove?

In short: An engine test video of a run test shows the engine starts, holds oil pressure, runs smoothly and doesn't leak on the stand. It can't show how the engine will behave in your vehicle under load, with your outside parts and your cooling system. Ask which engine was tested, what was measured, and what record you get.

What can a run test on a stand show?

A run or "hot" test means the engine is started and run on a test stand before it is sent. Done properly, it can show:

  • the engine starts and idles;
  • oil pressure comes up and holds;
  • there are no obvious knocks or rattles;
  • there are no oil, fuel or coolant leaks on the stand;
  • it reaches temperature without trouble.

What doesn't a test video prove?

  • How it runs under load. A stand test is usually at idle and light revs, not towing up a hill.
  • How it works with your parts. Your turbo, injectors, sensors and cooling system are not on the stand.
  • That it is your engine. Unless the video shows the engine number, you can't tie it to the one you receive.
  • Long-term life. That comes down to the build, the fitting, the running in and the servicing.

What should you ask about testing before you buy?

  1. Is each engine run before dispatch, or a sample?
  2. Does the video or test sheet show the engine number?
  3. What was measured: oil pressure, compression, temperature?
  4. Was it run with a load, or at idle only?
  5. Do I get a copy?

A seller who tests properly should be happy to answer all five.

What testing happens after fitting?

On our workshop jobs, the engine is started, checked for leaks and oil pressure, and road tested before you collect it.
